Re: A special human skill
Music that is recorded digitally can never be closer to the musicians than it is on the hard disk in the recording studio. It's just entropy after that. The vinyl recording and reproduction process may indeed mellifluously embellish the sound. But to eschew digital sound is to throw away most record...

Re: Akurate/0 upgrade to Akurate/3 katalyst
Agree with what Ianw says totally. I have been this route. Kat is a big upgrade. I would suggest that an ADS Kat is as good as a KDS/0 in many ways. I forget the details but there was a catastrophic fire at a chip producers factory (No not McDonald type chips, but DAC type chips.) in Japan. This has...

Re: Culprit - The phono stage?
I am sorry to hear that your problem is becoming a worry. As a couple of us have said it is very difficult to diagnose at a distance. My only concern is - and I don't want to add to your worries - but is your dealer skilled enough to help you? Somebody who can travel a long way for many hours and th...

Re: Culprit - The phono stage?
Hi there, sorry to hear about your troubles. My first reaction is to wonder how well the LP12 was set up and how well the latest cartridge is installed. Certainly the LP can sound heavenly, but wrongly set up it can be drab. Also things like tracking weight, VTA, biasing and positioning of the cartr...

Re: Cut your own vinyl?
I think you open up some interesting points Springwood. I hold perhaps a minority view in these parts the vinyl and turntables add something pleasant to the sound of music. Converting a signal into the physical domain and converting it back again improves the perceived sound. It gives you a great op...

Why would one want to do this? Why not just get a DAC and listen to the original file?

I think whatever the rights and wrongs of the LP12 and the reliability of folk who insist they use tunedem, we are in danger of straying from the spirit of Christmas. Life is hard for most of us at the moment. I know that several regulars of this forum have personal tragedies in their lives to conte...

Re: Please help
Hi Eli The fact that it shows up in neither your ADSM or MDSM suggest to me that there is nothing wrong with either of them. Neither have internal settings coincidentally become set to exclude T & Q. It really sounds like a network problem to me. I assume you have a good internet connection. I would...

Re: Forum issues are discussed here
It is interesting how both sides of the street seem to be shouting "you have become intolerant" for some time. And I am sure to some extent both sides have a point. As somebody who consciously does not rely on tunedem to make decisions, I have been on the edge of this forum for years. Perhaps some t...

Re: Streaming service
I think it is unreliable to develop firm opinions about streaming. My experience is that they all vary from time to time, dependent upon the source material on their hard disks and network noise and traffic (which will vary). Possibly one's own equipment will process it differently at different time...

Re: upgrade path
Shame to hear that Linn are doing no more Katalyst upgrades because of the catastrophic fire at the DAC factory in Japan recently. They are keeping their stock for new units only. I am aware that I sometimes hold minority views on this forum, but on the question of digital sound, I simply say this: ...

I don't particularly need an apology; I think we are all a bit irritable on here for reasons we have discussed. Nor do I want to take offence at Defender's making assumptions about my soldering ability. I am not going to wave my credentials but I used to be an Electrical Engineer. The main fault, as...

Re: upgrade path
Hi Fredrick, I am sure we must be misunderstanding each other. But Get a potentiometer (variable resistance) of 10k ohms. Connect the left terminal to source output. Connect the right hand terminal to common ground (signal earth). Connect the wiper (centre terminal) to the input of the power amp. N...

Re: upgrade path
Thank your for that clarification Don. That's exactly why active preamps are better than passive. I'm interested in how you'd configure the passive resistor divider to make it high impedance for the source and low impedance for the power amp. Please explain. Hi Fredrick, I am sure we must be misund...

Re: upgrade path
Yes, I think that passive preamps are inherently flawed. It's not a question of how well they're made but that they lower the volume by resistive division. This causes the output impedance to be high instead of low. And that is not a good thing. It may be that passive preamps do not sound good, but...

Re: Forum issues are discussed here
Any final decision about a Music category, Mr L? It would be useful in the stay-at-home-days. I know that this group has some really special musical tastes, which at the moment we have to share on the same category as internal modifications. As I said before I would happily help with moderation and ...

Guys, guys, you are in danger of spilling some beer........ The real problem is that everyone is frustrated with covid at the moment, and all forums perhaps gain more importance than they normally would. Hi discodave
Many years ago when the Sony Walkman was first out my wife taped earphones to herself for many hours when expecting our daughter.
Mainly Vivaldi and Beatles.
Martha turned out to play many instruments and be very musical.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
OK, so while we are talking about plugs and little tweaks, I have been told of this a couple of times over the years. My experiments have been inconclusive: Simply, do not push your plugs all the way into the sockets on your speakers. That is, leave a few mms between the plastic collar (i.e. red or ...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
DiscoDave, If you were near York, I would do it for you. If you bought it from a local Linn dealer, just take it back - they should fix it for you, possibly FOC. Which leads to another problem with silvers and blacks - they are always very tightly fitting, especially with recessed back panels like t...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
Come on chaps. Let's not get so certain of ourselves. My take on the photo in question is: Yes, it is poorly soldered with too much heat. But it was probably done by a semi-skilled professional! I bought a pair if Linn silvers from my local Linn dealer. They were genuine. After a few years use I mov...
