Re: Limits of upgrading and tweaking: can it irritate and hurt your ears?
When I place speakers in a room I start with them in the corner and play some music. Then I pull them into the room till the bass snaps into focus. Or to put it another way snaps into tunefulness. From there I adjust toe-in. Listening for the most tuneful angle. my understanding is that this is a pe...

Re: Linn 3k array vs previous Linn speakers and other brands
But please don't take my word for it. Look for speakers with Accuton drivers and compare them against your Akubariks. Or look for classic, top of the range 1950's to 1980's EV, Altec, JBL's with compression drivers and horns. What speakers have Accuton drivers? Any recent speakers with compression ...

Re: Limits of upgrading and tweaking: can it irritate and hurt your ears?
Dear friends, I’m rather new on this forum. With two topics: slipsik in excelsis deo and damping feet. Contributions about what should be a good sound. At this moment I experience limits of upgrading and tweaking. I ‘m afraid i’m somewhere beyond limits. Upgrading was about better amp, better cartr...

Re: Linn 3k array vs previous Linn speakers and other brands
Here: https://willys-hifi.com/collections/accuton-drive-units/products/accuton-c173-6-090-sapphire-midrange The manufacturer describes this midrange as a 120mm cone in a 170mm basket. I don’t think listening to speakers will tell me anything about the performance of the individual drive units. Kans...

Re: Linn 3k array vs previous Linn speakers and other brands
The Kef B110 used in the Kan’s (very tuneful) and LS3/5a’s (not particularly tuneful) has a 10.5g moving mass. The £850 Accuton midrange driver is 1/3 heavier at 14g. Just sayin! I can't find any Accuton drivers that sell for £850. Maybe you can tell us exactly which one you were referring to? Are ...

Re: Linn 3k array vs previous Linn speakers and other brands
The sort of distortion with Akubariks in the midrange is not the sort of crackly distorion you get on AM on a car radio whilst driving near Newark. It's a not being able to cope with the vocalist, lead guitar, rhythm, keyboard player all hittin a transient at the same time type of distortion, Which ...

Re: Linn 3k array vs previous Linn speakers and other brands
Beating a Kaber or a Ninka is not a great acheivement amongst properly engineered speakers. The Linn speakers that I've heard with 3K arrays, such as Akubariks are speakers that I'd rate as having excessively distorted midrange - at the generous volumes used for the demos / bake-offs I attended. Wit...

Re: Is that a Linn felt mat or are you just pleased to see me?
I'm surprised at the lack of comments on the design here. I've been following it a bit on the PFM and Naim forums. Still curious why the platter needs to be so high - is that something to do with the magnetic bearing do you think? Can't say I'm overly hopeful it's a deck I'd enjoy listening to but ...

Re: Culprit - The phono stage?
In november 2019 I had a Rega Exact cart mounted on my Rega Planar 3, and indeed the difference in sound quality was huge.(Having as a reference Rega Carbon cart). January 2021, I bought my LP12. So basically there's more than one year time gap between the two. Unfortunately I do not have the Exact...

Re: Culprit - The phono stage?
Guys, For sure I don't want to raise flames or provoke hard feelings. Just assuming that my lp12 is perfectly set, it is possible that my rather old Revox B250 to "strangulate" the musical performance? Borrowing an amplifier shouldn't be much of an hassle. The dealer assures me and he swears that m...

Hello BSilviuLu, You are obviously not happy with your LP12. Unfortunately I do not think you can salvage this situation. Re: Culprit - The phono stage?
Presumably you paid quite a bit for the Majik LP12? If you paid that much it should sound considerably better than the much cheaper Rega 3. Regardless of the amplification and speakers that you are using. Otherwise what is the point? It's just been a big waste of money. In evolving your system it sh...

Here’s a comparison between a Rega P3 and a Technics SL1200 turntable. So many variables,I went from listening to Gigaport for the previous few days to get an idea of it again then did the clips ,so maybe NOS DAC was improving from starting off cold .Who knows . It's possible there's some burn-in / long term warm up on the NOS DAC. What power supply are you using on t...

Re: Gigaport HD+ vs Cheap NOS DAC from CHINA!(results sat 19th Dec)
I tried listening to C & D yesterday and was having a hard time - it was the end of a busy day. I tried again just now and they are both good but I find D moves me more. Yes, it’s interesting that on this particular track C&D are so close, when on the first two tracks there is an appreciable differ...

Re: Hierarchy within the speaker
I have no idea what the hierarchy is within a speaker. That's because I haven't done the appropriate tests to determine this. I haven't for example, taken two pairs of speakers with identical cabinets and very different drivers and then demo'd them against each other. All I have done is to compare a...
