Re: Playground for practical listening exercises

Lindsay, sorry to hear of your difficulties with your PC. Using an iPhone might make more sense to show differences in your source setups. You can level match each of them and would give us an opportunity to hear the rest of your setup as well. I’d certainly be interested in listening to the result...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises

I'm more interested in what you hear when you listen to your clips, lindsayt. I hear saturation on all of them. With the worse sounding recordings being more saturated. Saturation is terrible from a tunedem point of view. The saturation on these recordings make them unlistenable for pleasure. It's ...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises

Talking 1 was a Linn LP12 with Cirkus, Lingo 2, Ittok LVIII, Troika, T Kable, on an original Sound Organisation turntable table, EAR 834p. It was set up and serviced by the Sound Organisation in York shortly before these recordings. Talking 2 was an EMT 950 with EMT TSD15 SFL cartridge, with no sta...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises

Looking pretty unanimous regarding Talking1. What are we comparing? 2 different vinyl sources. So which is which? I'd prefer to do the reveal after I've read the thoughts and comments of the person that prompted me to publish them... In the meantime would you care to share your thoughts on the You ...

Re: Linn Adikt 3

No clips from me. I don't have adequate recording equipment. No adequate recording equipment? People on here use mobile phones... It's just that there are better alternatives on the used market - based on my listening tests. Deja vu, all over again. Do you think that a mobile phone is adequate reco...

Re: Linn Adikt 3

I'm sure millions believe you Lindsayt , although your comparisons could be with a badly set-up LP12 which can sound like your description. Can I have a witness? For witnesses, there's no better witness than yourself. It's entirely up to you if you go ahead and do your own listening tests of a 2022 ...

Re: Linn Adikt 3

That's very interesting Lindsayt ,could you provide some clips please, otherwise that above statement is simply going to appear as evangelising and to some as heresy. No clips from me. I don't have adequate recording equipment. This isn't religion. Terms like evangelising or heresy are hyperbolic. ...

Re: Linn Adikt 3

... Yet the Majik LP12 itself is still $4995 - no price increase. Which makes it even more of a bargain and shows sensitivity to the competitive market. (Is there really a competitive turntable for $5000? Doubtful, but we are partly dealing with appearances here.) But the passive Klimax 350s? Oh ye...

Re: JBL 308P and 708P

Although the 110s are not at well endowed in the Bass department, or the dynamic range - they do have some bass and dynamics, easily enough for me to enjoy the music and 'hum along'. The Bass drum and Bass guitar are not absent, just reduced in quantity. The timing and rhythm of the track are still...

Re: JBL 308P and 708P

I agree. All one needs is a ‘musical’ set of speakers that let the rest of the system do it’s job, with minimal interference. Soaring treble and thundering bass are good and well but never at tjhe expense of musicality. My Komponent 110s have no bass and very little dynamics but I think they are as...

Re: JBL 308P and 708P

Just finnished my 308 project. I have boxes them into plywood. They Play really well, even though I have a bad source right now (Apple tv-naim dac awaiting Källa). I have not compared systematically without boxes. I also have a Kikkin. They now feel like big Spendor speakers. I have also made the s...

Re: JBL 308P and 708P

Needs to be tested. JBL recommends using their DSP amplifiers with a digital filter that they built. The curves can be found on the internet, but they can only be used with a configurable filter (most likely there are no analogue filters that can do the trick). My experience with digital crossovers...

Re: Passive vs Active ATC Pro Monitors in a Lejonklou system

ATC speakers start to get good from the 50's upwards. Their smaller speakers sound pants - relatively speaking. ATC SCM50's are the sort of speakers where many owners are happy with them, but they are not everyone's cup of tea. Using tune demo, they are OK, but not that good compared to other large ...

Re: Turntables

Talking about turntables, am I a strange duck in the pond as I am probably the only one in this forum playing a vintage Lenco (refurbished, new plinth, new tonearm cable 76/S, Nagaoka MP300j, Slipsik). Very happy with it, very natural and musical, never felt the need of comparing it with Linn LP 12...

Re: JBL 308P and 708P

Some people like their speakers naked, some prefer clothed. For me grill(e)s are useful only for cooking :) Back to the JBLs, after watching an interview with the 82 year old Floyd Toole I ordered a JBL LSR 310s. Despite some hearing loss and life's ups and downs Floyd retains a razor sharp mind an...

You've no taste LindsayTParty they look absolutely fabulous to these eyes as I've always wanted Saras visually and the 308s kind of give me a similar feel. I have my turntable and preamp to one side of my speakers, but I would definitely try them in between speakers in order to compare shorter inter...

https://i.imgur.com/hzS685q.jpg?1 There doesn't appear to be any easy way to attach grills to them? They are the sort of speaker that look as though they'd look better with grills on. Is there any domestically acceptable way in which you could move your turntable well away from the speakers? Having...

Re: JBL 308P and 708P

The best JBL speaker I ever heard is the JBL 4675C (probably, because of their size I haven't been able to compare them directly to 308/708P but I trust my gut feeling here). There are probably many fantastic speakers in their lineup but there are also many that aren't performing (like the 3678, 47...

Re: JBL 308P and 708P

Summary: we've found the only JBL musical speaker ever made (lightning doesn't strike twice etc.). Are you being hyperbolic? "the only JBL musical speaker ever made"? The JBL 4350 and 4355? How were they lacking in musicality, in your opinion, when you auditioned them in a comparative demo?

Re: Turntables

I replaced my LP12 with Cirkus, Lingo 2, late Ittok, Troika with an EMT 930 and then also an EMT 950. The EMT's sound like grown-up versions of my LP12. Since I bought the EMT's the price of them - in general has gone up a lot from the £1900 & £2250 I paid for mine. There are a number of other non-l...
