Re: What Makes a Loudspeaker Musical?
Thanks for your explanation lindsayt. You’ve obviously put a lot of thought into your project, based on years of listening experience. Have you taken the next step and started experimenting? Yes I have started experimenting. Although I would stress that I'm at the starting stage in terms of produci...

Re: What Makes a Loudspeaker Musical?
That’s all well and good if all you listen to is the sound of bass drums. But that same driver has to reproduce all frequencies up to (and beyond) the x/o frequency. How tuneful is the driver throughout its operating range? This is much more important than reproducing the scale of an instrument. Tb...

Re: What Makes a Loudspeaker Musical?
By what measure do you think a large woofer outperforms a smaller woofer? This has already been answered in page 2 of this thread by markiteight. As an expansion on his post, think about bass drums and how they produce the sound that underpins the majority of pop and rock tracks. How big is a bass ...

Re: What Makes a Loudspeaker Musical?
The Linn website says that the 360's have twin 9" woofers per channel. My quick google research indicates that Seas L26's are 10". markiteight had it spot on when he talked about big woofers twitching vs smaller woofers thrashing in and out. andy2 makes a great point about the motor strength. Which ...

Re: Linn 50th Anniversary
With the 360's you're looking at a retail price to component cost ratio of 10 to 1 (maybe more). In 30 years time, you should be able to buy them at a price that's close to a 1 to 1 ratio. Right now, by buying used or going DIY or both, you can get speakers where the ratio is below 1. For example, f...

Re: Linn 50th Anniversary
The basss drivers are tweaked Seas XM011-08 L22ROY2 newly developed by a team under Håvard Sollien, head of R&D. Don't know what model number the 6" low/mid is but it's also Seas Fabrikker as you clearly could tell from the distinctive cast ( Swedish sourced) alu chassis when they demonstrated thei...

Re: Linn 50th Anniversary
What drivers are they using in their latest speakers?
My understanding is that Linn don't make their own drivers.

Re: How we define "good sound"
What do you think was going on with Richard Dunn to make him hate Linn so much? How do you square that away? Well, back in the day NVA was seen as a viable alternative to NAIM amplification but the bulk of the flat earth HiFi press-of-the-day would have none of it. So his commercial success fell vi...

Re: Linn Majik 109
I also got rid of the Linn speaker cables, now i have Qed profile 79 that is much better than split Linn K400 when you use singlewire, you should try it. That's interesting. I've never heard any difference in tunefulness between speaker cables. Have heard slight tonal differences in some demos. But...

Re: How we define "good sound"
IMO, Richard Dunn, owner of NVA electronics had an axe to grind with Linn, period. I don’t recall any turntable beating out a LP12 when needle drop results were shared on Pink Fish forum, including those from Bake-Offs. It’s a shame Tony was forced by big tech to delete all those threads on his for...

Re: How we define "good sound"
Thank-you to the moderation team for moving my post into this thread. I agree that it makes sense to discuss the area that I raised in this thread instead of the thread about the iconic turntable youtube video. OK, I’ll give it a go. I think the most likely thing going on is that we listen for diffe...

Re: How we define "good sound"
This post and the following discussion have been moved here from the Video about 10 iconic turntables thread. -Moderator In 1983, when I was buying my first system, I demoed a Linn LP12 with Basik LVX against a Rega Planar 3 with both having the A&R P77 cartridge. To my ears the LP12 was well ahead...

Re: Video about 10 iconic turntables.
I don’t disagree. A quick comparison against the Axis demonstrated that. However, it was still the most tuneful “budget” turntable ca February 1983 (sic). So all those middle of the range turntables from Pioneer, JVC, Kenwood/Trio, Sony etc didn't exist? Sorry lindsayt, I don’t understand. Can you ...

Re: Video about 10 iconic turntables.
There was a time when the Rega Planar 3 was so much better than any other turntable, up to an LP12, I seriously queried Linn’s logic for introducing the Axis. There didn’t seem to be the musical space to squeeze another turntable in. How wrong was I!!! Not only was the Axis more musical than the RP...

Re: Video about 10 iconic turntables.
None of this stuff can be evaluated in a Youtube video, you of all people should know this. Thomas wasn't suggesting that though, as far as I read it anyway. From the last couple of post it appears that tpetsch is getting good at reading things into my posts that aren't actually there! I had absolu...

Re: Video about 10 iconic turntables.
The only real way to get a truly proper turntable -or any piece of gear- demo is to bring it home and listen to it in your own system over several days. But unfortunately this is not possible for most. I agree about getting a turntable into your own home and listening to it in your system. And comp...

Re: Video about 10 iconic turntables.
Part 2 is released! "The Rega P10 - Why?" https://youtu.be/0qWVWnxVJsU I got as far as 5:40 before getting bored of it. His MG analogy doesn't work. Cars are cars. Turntables are turntables. Someone else could come up with a Chipendale cabinet analogy. Or a Stradivarius violin analogy. Or a Victori...

Re: Video about 10 iconic turntables.
I have no doubt that the 604s are an interesting and renowned speaker, although I have no personal experience with them. I'm not surprised somebody has come out with a new version of them, but it isn't actually Altec, is it? Alex Halberstadt, who gave that wonderful review of the Entity 1.1 in Ster...

I agree with the comments above except for the BTW part. Re: Video about 10 iconic turntables.
That's a video made by Harley Lovegrove of Pearl Acoustics. They make single driver speakers. Interesting speakers with the oak cabinets. Not quite my cup of tea, but I can understand why some customers would like them. At 4500 euros excluding tax and shipping, I'd be wondering, why not make your ow...

Re: An interesting dilemma
The 308's are ultra budget speakers. One can't expect miracles from such cheaply made speakers. The most tuneful sounding JBL speakers that I've heard so far had 15" woofers. Most people aren't happy to have wide-bodied speakers in their homes. If you ever decide that you would be happy with a 15" o...

Re: Munich show 2022
... The way I think about racks and supports is that they combine with the HiFi component to form a symbiotic sub-system, with the support providing 55% of the performance and the component the other 45%, or something of that ilk. If the support provides somewhere in the region of 55% of the perfor...

Re: Munich show 2022
From a source first point of view, with a digital source and solid state amplification, where does the rack sit in the hierachy? IIRC, there are reports on this forum here that an Akurate DS on a Harmonihyllan rack outperforms a Klimax DS on another rack, so the rack might have a high ranking in th...
